  8.     Notes on Version 10.00 of PC-VT
  9.  
  10. The underlying functionality of PC-VT has not changed so the manual has
  11. not changed. What has been added are the features most requested by
  12. the users of PC-VT over the past year.
  13.  
  14. We feel that this version of PC-VT is easier to use and more accurately
  15. emulates the VT and 401x series of terminals.
  16.

  19. Installation Instructions :
  20.  
  21. If you are a new user of PC-VT, just copy all of the files from the root
  22. directory of the diskette to either a working diskette or to your hard
  23. disk. If you are copying it to your hard disk, make sure that the
  24. directory you install it into is in the 'path=' environment variable.
  25.  
  26. We usually install PC-VT in a subdirectory '/pc-vt' and then add the
  27. following two lines to our autoexec.bat
  28.  
  29. path <original path>;c:\pc-vt
  30. set pc-vt=c:\pc-vt
  31.  
  32. If you have been using PC-VT Professional version 1.00, then copy only
  33. PC-VT.EXE, HELP.DAT, UTIL.EXE, and DSZ.COM to your already existing
  34. PC-VT directory ( remember, you have get the UTIL.EXE program from the
  35. utility subdirectory and unarchive it with ARCE). Then run UTIL to
  36. take your existing 10 entry dialing directory and enlarge it to 100
  37. entries. See the section on enhanced features to learn more about the
  38. 100 entry dialing directory.

  40. If you have been using PC-VT User Supported Software version 9.0d, then
  41. copy only PC-VT.EXE, HELP.DAT, PARAMS.DAT, DIALER.DAT, MACRO.DAT,
  42. UTIL.EXE, and DSZ.COM to your already existing PC-VT directory. You will
  43. have to manually reconstruct your Dialer Directory.
  44.  
  45. The number and size of programs distributed with PC-VT has grown and now
  46. some files may be archived. If there are files on the disk with an
  47. extension of .ZIP, the UNZIP.EXE or PKUNZIP.EXE program to pull the
  48. individual files out of the archive.

  52. Enhanced features of PC-VT version 10.0 :
  53.

  56. The dialer has been enlarged to 100 entries. Now in the dialer frame,
  57. the PgUp and PgDn keys will page through the 100 entries, 10 per screen.
  58. If you have version 1.0 of PC-VT, there is a program named UTIL.EXE
  59. which will take your dialer and add 90 more blank entries to it without
  60. changing the first 10. If you use the /dnnn option to dial from the
  61. command line, nnn can be a host number from 1 to 100.

  63. Use the <PgUp> and <PgDn> keys to page through the dialer. For automatic
  64. command line dialing, the first entry is host 1 and the last entry is
  65. host 100. Each pages displays the host number of the first host shown on
  66. that page.

  70. ZMODEM and YMODEM are now supported using the external DSZ program from
  71. Omen Technology, Inc. We are including a copy of the DSZ program on the
  72. diskette as a service. We are in no way affiliated with Omen Technology.
  73. DSZ is a User Supported Program. We encourage you read the DSZ
  74. documentation file to find out about the program. PC-VT automatically
  75. calls the DSZ program when you select either ZMODEM or YMODEM protocol.
  76.  
  77. PC-VT does this by forking off the DSZ.COM program which is on the
  78. distribution diskette, in the archive DSZ.ARC in the DSZ subdirectory.
  79. YMODEM is selected by the '=y' option and ZMODEM is selected by the '=z'
  80. option. The old ASCII CTRL-Z file transfer method is now selected with
  81. '=Z'.
  82.  
  83. You can select a default file transfer protocol on the SETUP B frame.
  84. If ZMODEM is selected, when you do a file receive, <CTRL><F3>, the popup
  85. to ask for the local filename is bypassed since ZMODEM protocol requires
  86. that the sending computer include the name of the file. This means that
  87. the name of the file will not change when receiving a file from a remote
  88. computer.
  89.  
  90. Conversely, when you send a file, the receiving computer on the other
  91. end, will not ask you for a file name. Rather, when you press <CTRL><F4>
  92. on the PC, PC-VT will ask you for the name of file on the PC which you
  93. want to upload and that filename will be passed to ZMODEM.

  97. PC-VT Supports COM3 and COM4 for serial communications
  98.  
  99.     This is selectable via the same feature selection item on the
  100. SETUP B frame as in older versions of the program.
  101.  
  102.     The SETUP frame will show a number 0 through 3 and the COM name
  103. shown just above that will show the actual value of the serial port
  104. which is selected.
  105.  
  106.     To use COM3 or COM4, your version of DOS must support these
  107. devices with these interrupt numbers and port addresses :

  119. The printer escape sequences are handled more like a VT terminal.
  120. Sequences received while the local printer is enabled, will be sent to
  121. the printer. This will permit you to include printer control escape
  122. sequences in the information sent from the host computer to your local
  123. printer.

  127. In the SETUP B frame the 's' key now performs the "STORE SETUP DATA to
  128. USER MEMORY" just like the 's' key in the SETUP A frame.

  132. You can move from the Dialing Directory to the SETUP A frame by pressing
  133. <CTRL><F1> in the Dialing Directory. Pressing <Esc> in the SETUP frame
  134. will return you to the Dialing Directory. Pressing <Esc> again will
  135. return you to the communication frame.
  136.

  139. A shortcut has been added to the selection of the communications port.
  140. In the SETUP B frame the 'c' key now toggles the COM port selected. This
  141. works just like toggling the feature bit on the bottom of the screen but
  142. is easier to do.

  146. For those with unusual requirements, PC-VT can use a communications port
  147. just as it finds it without changing the baud rate or data bits. Select
  148. this in the SETUP B frame as a baud rate selection of "INIT". This option
  149. replaced the old 110 baud setting which is no longer supported.

  153. PC-VT does a better job of emulating the escape sequences to the local
  154. printer. Previously, escape sequences where filtered out before
  155. characters were sent to the printer. Now they are handled like the VT100
  156. and passed on to the printer.
  157.  
  158. Technically, once print_only is turned on,
  159.  
  160.     1. all escape sequences go to printer and are not acted upon by
  161. the emulator
  162.  
  163.     2. except <ESC>[4i which turns off printer only mode.
  164.

  167. PC-VT now handles LPT1 through LPT4 and COM1 through COM4 for the
  168. printer port.
  169.  
  170. This is selectable via the same feature selection item on the SETUP B
  171. frame as in older versions of the program. Be sure that you don't select
  172. the same COM port as PC-VT is using for Host communications.
  173.  
  174. The SETUP frame will show a number 0 through 7 and the printer name
  175. shown just above that will show the actual name of the printer which is
  176. selected for output.
  177.  
  178. To use LPT3, LPT4, COM3 or COM4, your version of DOS must support these
  179. devices.
  180.  
  181. If you want to use one of the COM ports for a printer, the DOS MODE
  182. command must be executed before running PC-VT to initialize the port
  183. parameters. This is normal operations for systems using a serial
  184. printer.
  185.  
  186. For example :

  188.     mode com2:96,n,8,1,p
  189.  
  190. Most users of serial printer already have this command in their
  191. autoexec.bat file. Check your DOS manual for instructions on how to use
  192. this command.
  193.  
  194. The printer port is saved with each phone number so that if you add
  195. another host, be sure to change the printer port to the one you want.
  196.  
  197. PC-VT polls the serial printer continuously just like the 'p' option on
  198. the DOS MODE command.
  199.

  202. RTS/CTS flow control has been added. It is selectable from the flow
  203. control feature selection on the SETUP B frame. You can select NONE,
  204. XON/XOFF (the most useful), and RTS/CTS.
  205.

  208. In some cases, the  <Esc> interpret/display switch did not work
  209. correctly. That is now fixed.
  210.

  213. The <Esc> key now cancels filename and directory entries.

  217. In the Dialer, no carriage return is sent to the modem if the dialer
  218. command line is completely blank or if the CTRL-X character is in the
  219. first position of the line.

  223. In the Dialer and in the Macro key processor, a new, command, CTRL-6,
  224. drops DTR for 1 second. Displays as a solid triangle.
  225.  
  226. In the Dialer, if first character in number is CTRL-X or blank, don't
  227. send any dial characters.

  231. The ALT-L key was changed to toggle application keypad mode on and off.
  232. Only needed if you have special requirements.

  236. Added a SETUP feature to disable PC-VT Private Sequences. Some users
  237. with some VAX software had trouble with these. If you use this with an
  238. old copy of DIALER.DAT, it will default to enabled unless you change it.
  239. The sequences disabled include COLOR support, "<ESC> [ ? x h" and "<ESC>
  240. [ ? x l" with x greater than or equal to 21 and the "<ESC> [ ? x n" with
  241. x equal to 10 or 11.

  245. PC-VT had a problem running KERMIT out of COM2. This is now corrected.
  246.

  249. PC-VT will now accept both '/' and '-' as command line flags. For
  250. example :
  251.     pc-vt/d1
  252.  
  253.     and
  254.  
  255.     pc-vt -d1
  256.  
  257. are identical. Notice that if you use the dash, you must put a space
  258. between the program name the command line option.

  262. PC-VT had to work around a bug in the VMS version of WordPerfect. If you
  263. have that program running under VMS, select option 2 of the 'PC-VT
  264. Private Escapes' feature (which is the first feature in the first group)
  265. on the SETUP B screen. This disables the '<ESC>[?25l' and '<ESC>[?25h'
  266. PC-VT Private Escape Sequences. I don't understand why WordPerfect
  267. decided to use these sequences. A real VT-100 would ignore them so
  268. nothing is gained.

  272. Special editor support has been added for Emacs running under SCO Xenix.
  273. If you have need for that editor and the patches to it necessary to use
  274. the entire keyboard while running PC-VT contact us.
